Friends of the Whau

Friends of the Whau Inc (pronounced "foe") is a team-led volunteer community-based ecological restoration organisation formed in Auckland in January 2000. Our purpose is to raise community awareness about environmental issues affecting the Whau River catchment . We do this by acting as an umbrella group collaborating with all stakeholders in advocacy, education, and practical action to restore the ecology of the Whau River catchment.

While the Governance Board makes most of the decisions for our organisation, our supporting members provide input, feedback, and give the impetus to focus on the priorities that they feel are most important. The board is extremely fortunate to have so may voluntary supporters involved in our numerous environmental activities.

The aim is to restore the Whau River systems natural ecology by promoting the reduction of pollution and assisting in the natural restoration of the area to encourage the return of native flora and fauna. We aim to raise awareness and encourage the community to actively protect and restore the river’s ecology, history and cultural associations.

We are looking for new members with diversified backgrounds, interests, and talents. To maintain our momentum and increase our group's effectiveness, we welcome new volunteer members. You might like to consider joining our team to lead, or just join in our many activities and events. You will find that we are flexible and our members enjoy helping each other.
